Alums on English

“Exploring literature opens the mind to the way other people and cultures think and analyzing writing and communication styles teaches the craft of expressing both one’s own and others’ thoughts.”

—Phyllis Sledge Stiles ’79

Welcome to MHC English!

English majors at Mars Hill College follow a rigorous course of study in literature and composition leading to the Bachelor of Artsdegree. Majors who complete additional coursework may pursue secondary school licensure. Students in other disciplines may choose to minor in English.

In addition, the English Department is responsible for the first-year composition “Connector” component of the college’s Liberal Arts in Action general education curriculum. Most new students at Mars Hill enroll in a two-semester sequence of writing courses to prepare them for the essay assignments that await in future courses.
