Course Description

ENG113 (Honors English) is an accelerated course in composition and research for first-year students with advanced writing and critical thinking skills who place into the course via their placement diagnostic scores, standardized test scores, and high school transcripts. Students who complete the course successfully (by earning a grade of C- or higher) satisfy the College Composition Connector requirement of Mars Hill’s Liberal Arts in Action general education program, which most students achieve by passing both ENG111 (Expository Essay) and ENG112 (Documented Essay). In addition, ENG113 is a paperless course (required textbooks excepted); all assignments will be made available online, and all exercises will be submitted electronically.

Instructional Methods

ENG113 is primarily a discussion-based course. There will be the occasional mini-lecture and, at the end of the term, student presentations, but most class meetings will consist of dialogue on a number of topics pertinent to composition and research.

Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete ENG113...

  1. ...construct sentences, paragraphs, and essays that demonstrate unity and coherence.
  2. ...comprehend and apply the conventions of standard written English.
  3. ...demonstrate understanding of writing as a multistage process, including revision and editing, and incorporating, as appropriate, critical responses from the instructor and other readers.
  4. ...comprehend, evaluate, and write analytical and/or persuasive/argumentative essays.
  5. ...complete a multistage research project through use of the main tools of library research.
  6. ...synthesize the results of the research project in a unified, coherent, formally correct research paper that integrates evidence from a variety of sources.
  7. ...create and deliver an oral presentation.
  8. ...comprehend and learn to avoid the general offense of plagiarism, as well as the specific consequences of committing plagiarism in academic courses at Mars Hill College.
