Course Description
English 201 is a single-semester survey of British literature that covers material from the post-Roman era to the twentieth century. Designed for non-majors, the course fulfills the literature component of the college's general education program.
Required Texts
Damrosch, David, gen. ed. The Longman Anthology of British Literature. Compact ed. New York: Longman, 2000.
Shelley, Mary. Frankenstein. Ed. Maurice Hindle. Harmondsworth: Penguin, 1992.
Course Goals & Objectives
The primary goal of English 201 is twofold: to familiarize students with the literary traditions of the British Isles and thereby to foster critical thinking skills. To accomplish this, the course will require students to examine key texts from the Medieval, Renaissance, Enlightenment, Romantic, Victorian, and Modern periods and to perform close readings of those texts. Students will pay particular attention to the differences between texts from different periods to track to development of British culture.
Instructional Methods
This course is primarily discussion-based with occasional mini-lectures. Students will be required to participate regularly in class conversations about course texts. Exams will have an in-class objective component and a take-home essay component. |
