English Major — Requirements

Students who major in English must complete at least 42 semester hours of coursework in the program, and at least 128 semester hours overall, to qualify for the Bachelor of Arts degree. Download a copy of the department’s Major Advising Worksheet (PDF) for detailed guidelines.

Major Core Requirements (5 courses/15 hours)

  • ENG201 — British Literature Survey I
  • ENG202 — British Literature Survey II
  • ENG205 — American Literature Survey
  • ENG210 — Introduction to Literary Study
  • ENG450 — Senior Seminar

American Literature (at least 1 course/3 hours chosen from the following)

  • ENG321 — American Literature, origins-1900
  • ENG322 — American Literature, 1900-present
  • ENG329 — Diversity in American Literature
  • ENG340 — Appalachian Literature

British Literature (at least 2 courses/6 hours chosen from the following)

  • ENG323 — British Literature, origins-1700
  • ENG324 — British Literature, 1700-1900
  • ENG325 — British Literature, 1900-present
  • ENG442 — Shakespeare

Language & Composition (at least 1 course/3 hours chosen from the following)

  • ENG332 — Structure & Usage of the English Language
  • ENG350 — Professional Writing
  • ENG430 — Fiction Writing
  • ENG431 — Poetry Writing
  • ENG440 — Composition Theory & Practice

Major Electives (at least 5 courses/15 hours of any upper-level ENG course or no more than 2 courses/6 hours from the following, no more than 1 course/3 hours may be at the 200-level)

  • COM231 — Public Speaking
  • COM320 — Interviewing & Reporting
  • COM321 — Documentary Writing
  • REL201 — Bible as Literature
  • TA301 — Theatre History & Literature I
