English Major — Student Learning Outcomes
In preparing for a meaningful life and meaningful work, graduates of
Mars Hill College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English demonstrate:
Knowledge
English majors acquire and apply knowledge of the main periods and cultural
contexts of primarily British and American literary history, representative
authors and works of each period, major critical approaches to literature,
and methods of professional discourse.
Effective Communication
English majors write well-organized and clearly presented critical essays
about literary texts; plan, organize, and produce well-organized and clearly
presented advanced expository, professional, and/or creative writing;
and generate well-organized and well-delivered oral presentations on topics
relevant to the study of literature and the English language.
Informed, Critical, and Creative Thinking
English majors research, analyze, and critique literary and professional
texts and their contexts in original and illuminating ways.
Aesthetic Awareness
English majors exhibit, both as readers and writers, an awareness of the
elements of literature and composition and the means by which they convey
thought, emotion, and perception.
Personal Growth and Social Responsibility
English majors demonstrate personal and professional integrity by meeting
deadlines, by working both independently and collaboratively, and by avoiding
plagiarism.
