Composition Connector
All Mars Hill College students are required to complete the College Composition
Connector component of the Liberal Arts in Action general education curriculum.
Most students satisfy this requirement by taking ENG111 and ENG112 in
their first year. Some students may be required to enroll in remedial
courses before taking ENG111, while others may be placed into an accelerated
one-semester course that satisfies the course.
During the Summer Orientation, Advising, and Registration program (SOAR),
each new first-year student at Mars Hill College takes an English placement
diagnostic test. Department faculty use the student’s score on this
test, along with his or her relevant standardized test score and high
school class percentile (when available) to place the student in the appropriate
first-year writing course.
ENG100: English as a Second Language
Students whose first language is not English are placed in ENG100, a course
that introduces them not only to the written and oral conventions of the
language but also to American culture. For non-native speakers, ENG100
is a prerequisite for ENG111; a student must earn at least a C- in ENG100
to enroll in ENG111.
ENG101: Basic Writing
Native English speakers whose composition skills need additional development
before they are ready to tackle college essay assignments are placed in
ENG101. For native English speakers with weak skills, ENG101 is a prerequisite
for ENG111; a student must earn at least a C- in ENG101 to enroll in ENG111.
ENG111: Expository Essay
Approximately two-thirds of new first-year students are placed in ENG111.
For all students, ENG111 is a prerequisite for ENG112; a student must
earn at least a C- in ENG111 to enroll in ENG112 and to satisfy graduation
requirements.
ENG112: Documented Essay
Students who arrive at Mars Hill with Advanced Placement, International
Baccalaureate, or dual enrollment/transfer credit for ENG111 are placed
in ENG112. For all students, ENG112 is a prerequisite for advanced ENG
courses, including those that satisfy the Literature
Connector requirement; a student must earn at least a C- in ENG112
to enroll in an advanced ENG course and to satisfy graduation requirements.
ENG113: Honors English
A select group of first-year students with particularly strong writing
skills are placed in ENG113, a fall course that satisfies the College
Composition Connector requirement in a single semester. ENG113 is the
equivalent of both ENG111 and ENG112 and satisfies the Literature
Connector prerequisite; a student must earn at least a C- in ENG113
to enroll in an advanced ENG course and to satisfy graduation requirements.
